Clear aligners are one of the most versatile and convenient orthodontic options out there. Made of a clear, flexible material, they’re comfortable, nearly invisible, and removable, which makes them a favorite for adults and teens who want a discreet way to straighten their teeth. They handle the same bite and alignment issues that metal braces do, minus the brackets and wires.
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
A series of custom-made trays gradually shifts your teeth into place. Each tray moves one tooth or a section of teeth at a time. Once a tray finishes its work, usually after about two weeks, you move on to the next.
Pain and Soreness
With no brackets or wires, clear aligners don’t cause much pain or soreness. You may feel temporary pressure for the first few days after switching trays. It can be a little uncomfortable, but it’s a good sign that the trays are doing their job.
Caring for Clear Aligners
Wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to clean them, eat, and drink. To clean them, brush and rinse the trays each time you brush your teeth.
Treatment Time
Treatment usually runs 9 to 16 months. Some patients also wear a retainer afterward to keep their teeth from drifting back. We’ll cover all of this as part of your treatment plan.
