Your removable appliance is carefully designed to move or hold your teeth. It only works when you wear it as instructed, so be sure to keep it in and bring it to every appointment.
Wear your appliance at all times, even while you sleep. You can take it out to eat, swim, or play vigorous sports. Within two or three days, your speech will be back to normal with the appliance in place. Try not to flip it with your tongue, since that can damage your teeth or break the appliance.
Your new appliance may make your teeth sore for a day or two, especially after an adjustment. If you get a sore spot on your gums, call our office and we’ll adjust it.
Clean your appliance by brushing it daily with toothpaste, and use denture cleaner now and then for a deeper clean. If you wear a bonded wire retainer behind your front teeth, take extra care to clean the wire and the area around it. Keep flossing every day.
Never wrap your appliance in a napkin or tissue and set it on the table, where you or someone else might toss it. Don’t put it in your pocket while playing, or you may break or lose it. Whenever it’s not in your mouth, keep it in its case.
Keep your appliance away from dogs and cats, who love to chew on them, and store it away from heat. Don’t boil your retainer to sterilize it. If it needs sterilizing, bring it in and we’ll be glad to disinfect it for you.
Please note that there’s an additional charge for lost or broken appliances.
