Impacted and Missing Teeth

Impacted Teeth

Impactions often happen when a developing tooth bud is positioned poorly, keeping the tooth from erupting into the mouth. Early loss of baby teeth or crowding can cause them too. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted, though canines and premolars can be as well.

This should be corrected because it can:

  • damage the roots of nearby teeth
  • interfere with the sinus cavity
  • leave unwanted spaces
  • lead to improper functioning of the teeth
  • cause premature wear
  • create asymmetric alignment

How can impacted teeth be corrected?

Usually we expose the impacted tooth over a few months and guide it into the right spot. This may involve a minor surgical procedure by an oral surgeon working closely with our practice, which lets us then guide the tooth into proper position.

Missing Teeth

Missing teeth means a tooth or teeth that should be present aren’t, often due to trauma or a tooth that never developed.

This should be corrected because it can:

  • cause improper functioning of the teeth
  • cause premature wear
  • create asymmetric alignment
  • make your smile less attractive

How can missing teeth be corrected?

Depending on the situation, we can close the space with braces or open it for tooth replacement. A bridge or dental implant are good restorative options when a space is created.
